1 dead, multiple injured in Mississippi Mudbug Festival shooting, sheriff says

Two people were detained at the scene for questioning, the sheriff said.

One person died and several others were injured in a multiple gunman incident at the Mississippi Mudbug Festival at the Jackson state fairground on Saturday, Hinds County Sheriff Tyree Jones said.

At least two people were detained at the scene, which was “closed and secured,” Jones said on social media late Saturday.

“Several gunmen are said to be involved and the investigation is being conducted as an active gunman situation,” Jones said on Twitter.

Several people were taken to local hospitals with unknown injuries, he said.

The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation has been called to assist with the investigation, following a shooting involving officers related to the incident at the fairgrounds, Jones said.

The Mississippi Mudbug Festival, scheduled through Sunday, featured live bands, carnival rides, and a crawfish boil. This year’s musical headliners were Blue Oyster Cult, Laine Hardy and Bobby Rush.
