It happened on Highway 52 North, near Interstate 40, around 4:05 a.m. According to the Winston-Salem Police Department, portions of Highway 52 northbound and Interstate 40 westbound are closed in the area. Interstate 40 eastbound is open, but with a detour. The North Carolina Department of Transportation says it may not be clear until around 10 a.m. Winston-Salem Police say of the 80 cows on board, 10 escaped. All cows are charged. Authorities have not confirmed whether any cows were injured in the crash. Police say if residents see livestock wandering, call the non-emergency hotline at 336-773-7700.
