Important news: One of Amazon’s top leaders, Dave Clark, the CEO of Amazon’s Worldwide Consumer company, is leaving the company to pursue unspecified “other opportunities” in a surprising twist in the tech giant’s executive ranks.

Here’s Amazon CEO Jassy’s full note, sent to employees this morning:

After working at Amazon for 23 years, Dave Clark has decided to leave the company to pursue other opportunities. His last working day at the office is on July 1.

Dave joined our Operations Pathways program in May 1999 – just a day after graduating from his MBA program – and he made the leap from teaching music to help us build and scale our Consumer Operations. Dave has had an increasing impact across the company, starting as an Operations Manager in Kentucky, growing to a GM in the Northeast, elevating to lead WW Operations and eventually leading the entire WW Consumer. He led teams that designed several generations of FCs, rebuilt Amazon’s transportation network from scratch, and developed significant talent across the organization.

Join me in thanking Dave for his many achievements over the years at Amazon and especially for what he has provided for customers. The past few years have been some of the most challenging and unpredictable we’ve had in the history of Amazon’s consumer business, and I especially appreciate Dave’s leadership during that time.

As we shared at our annual shareholder meeting last week, we have even more work ahead of us to get where we ultimately want to be in our consumer business. That’s why we try to be deliberate in our plans for Dave’s succession and any changes we make. I expect to be ready with an update for you in the coming weeks.

While change is never easy, I am optimistic about the plan the Consumer team has put in place and confident that if we continue to focus on executing it, we will deliver the right experiences for customers and results for the business.

Feel free to progress to your leaders and teams.

Thank you,

Andy
