Treasurer Josh Frydenberg said Australians will not see ‘cheap political expediency’ from the coalition when it comes to skilled migrants.
Mr Frydenberg and Shadow Treasurer Jim Chalmers faced each other in the 2022 Treasury Debate at the National Press Club of Australia on Wednesday.
“Those skilled migrants play an absolutely critical role in our economy and help address some of those workforce shortages,” he said.
“Our focus is on addressing some of those staff shortages that are very real.”
However, Mr Frydenberg said that this time, when speaking to employers, the biggest problem is where they can get more workers, which is “good news” for the young people entering the labor market and for the economy.
