Britain unveils an alternative to sleeping pills to treat insomnia… What is it?

Dubai, United Arab Emirates (CNN) — Looking for a good night’s sleep? According to the UK’s National Institute for Health and Quality of Care, the digital app for insomnia treatment is an effective alternative to sleeping pills.

A recommendation from the National Institute for Health and Quality of Care (NICE) last week says doctors in the UK’s National Health Service can prescribe Sleepio, which uses artificial intelligence to provide people with cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia, rather than sleep medication. Such as zolpidem and zopiclone, which can be addictive, although they are not intended for long-term use.

According to the National Institute for Health and Care Quality, nearly 800,000 people in England could benefit from using the Sleepio app.

The app offers a six-week digital self-help program that includes a sleep test, weekly interactive sessions of CBT-I, and a sleep pattern diary.

The institute said the app-based programme, which costs the NHS £45 ($56) for a patient, was more cost-effective for healthcare as it had resulted in fewer doctor visits and fewer prescriptions for sleeping pills after a year of use. †

“Our rigorous, transparent, evidence-based analysis has shown that Sleepio is more cost-effective for the NHS in primary care than sleeping pills and sleep,” Janet Cosell, acting director of medical and digital technologies for the National Institute of Health and Care Quality, said in a statement. It also reduces the dependence of people suffering from insomnia on addictive drugs such as zolpidem and zopiclone.”

According to the statement, 12 randomized controlled trials, considered the gold standard for medical research, have shown that Sleepio is more effective at reducing insomnia than healthy sleeping pills and sleeping pills.

The concept of healthy sleep refers to recommended behavioral and environmental practices to improve sleep quality.

These practices include maintaining a regular routine, sleeping in a dark, quiet, and cool room, and avoiding alcohol and caffeine consumption late in the day.

Sleepio is designed as a treatment that is completed in 6 weeks, but people can use it for 12 months from the time they start using the app.

The institute explained that this accessibility allows people to complete sessions on their own schedule, and they can repeat sessions if they wish.

Sessions focus on identifying the thoughts, feelings, and behaviors that contribute to insomnia symptoms.

Cognitive interventions are designed to improve the way a person thinks during sleep, and behavioral interventions are designed to promote a healthy sleep routine.
