BUFFALO MASS SHOOTING: Local tactical expert gives tips on what to do while shooting

DENVER (KDVR) – A tactical expert spoke to FOX31 about tips you need to know if you ever find yourself in a mass shooting scenario.

It’s a morbid, even sad thing to think about, but as this tactical expert explained, you’d rather be prepared for the worst than caught off guard when you’re around an active gunner.

“When you walk into the grocery store, when you walk into a public place, you have to have a plan,” said tactical expert James Allbee.

Seeing the footage of the Buffalo shooting, Allbee said it’s a moment to think about putting yourself in that situation to know what to do.

“It can even come from moment to moment, where you go down every aisle where there might be a good place to hide,” Allbee said.

Your first option, Allbee said, should always be to get away from danger.

“Try to find a place to run to, get out of there, know where your options are, know where your exits are,” Allbee said.

Your last option should be to know how to defend yourself.

“If you have to throw, throw everything you can at them, if it’s a can of green beans, then do it,” Allbee said.

Allbee says to pay attention and remain vigilant at all times.

“Put your phone down, we tend to spend so much time with our phones and everything around us that we don’t pay attention to the environment,” Allbee said.

As important as the physical environment is, Allbee said, so are the people.

“Pay attention to the people around you. It’s amazing what happens when you make eye contact with someone, good, bad or indifferent,” Allbee said. “People usually don’t want to be identified.”

Another piece of advice Allbee gave: If you see something suspicious, always say something.

Better to control something that may be nothing than to be what Allbee calls a “good” victim.
