Emergency services were called to the driveway of a vacant property in Eureka Street, Manunda about 5.30am to attend to the unconscious woman.
Despite efforts to save her, the woman died about 6.20am, according to police.
Detective Inspector Kevin Goan said a 47-year-old man, who had been in an intimate relationship with the woman, was found at the scene, having made arrangements for emergency services to attend.
The man has been assisting police with their investigation since her death.
Inspector Goan said both the woman and man were First Nations people, who were believed to have been rough sleepers living an “itinerant lifestyle”.
He said no weapons had been found at the scene.
Police have established a crime scene in the driveway, as well as at a nearby Caltex service station, and on nearby Fallon Street, where items of clothing had been found.
Inspector Goan said police were calling for anyone who was in the area between 4am and 6.30am today and may have dashcam footage to contact police, as well as anyone near the service station last night.
“We would like anyone that was in proximity to the Caltex service station last night into the early hours of this morning, who may have seen a group of First Nations persons gathered at the intersection there, we would like to speak to them also,” he said.
Inspector Goan said he understood some people would be reluctant to become involved with police, urging them to contact Crime Stoppers anonymously.
