Frydenberg calls for ‘power of dark blue’ to triumph over teal

Federal treasurer Josh Frydenberg has begged a thousand of his supporters to use the “power of the dark blue” to conquer a match from his teal independent challenger.

In a 15-minute speech, the treasurer said a vote for former pediatric neurologist Monique Ryan would be a vote for a “chaotic” hung parliament that would make it harder for future governments to implement big policies like JobKeeper or the AUKUS security pact.

Frydenberg claimed Labor leader Anthony Albanese was “in bed” with independents challenging inner-city liberals, as he described the “forgotten people” of Robert Menzies, the “warriors” of John Howard and the “quiet Australians” of Scott Morrison quoted.

“If they vote for a so-called independent vote, they’ll get Anthony Albanian and the Labor Party,” the treasurer said. “This is the choice. And we know that the Liberal Party represents the values and ideals of the peaceful Australians.”

The treasurer’s Kooyong electorate was the seat of liberal royalty. Former Prime Minister Robert Menzies held the electorate in Melbourne’s outback for 32 years. Former opposition leader Andrew Peacock was also a member of Kooyong.

But in this election, the seat is seriously threatened for the first time by the independent Monique Ryan who is ‘blue-green’.

Speaking without notes, Frydenberg reiterated his regular attacks on the climate-focused fundraising agency Climate 200 — which has provided about half of Ryan’s funding.

The treasurer called the group a “political party” and argued that Ryan, who was a member of the Labor Party between 2007 and 2010, would provide a Labor government in the event of a hung parliament. He added that this conflicts with the interests of Kooyong voters, who have never elected a Labor MP.
