Nintendo’s latest Indie World showcase had a few standout games, but only one of them had the audacity to combine a gun with an umbrella. That game is Gunbrella. It is from developer Doinksoft and publisher Devolver Digital and will be launched in 2023. It uses a noir-punk setting with stylized 2D images.

As the name suggests, you play as a character who primarily interacts with the world through the use of a gunbrella. This, of course, means shooting enemies. But it also means flying, sliding and ziplining through the air.

The game also does an excellent job of using 2D visual tricks. Doinksoft packed the trailer full of screen shakes and kinetic scenes. One particularly striking backdrop was a fast-moving train that players had to run on top of. Another was a giant rat boss that looked like several 2D sprites that the developer had stitched together. That creates a creepy look that makes the rat look even more creepy.

While Nintendo and its third-party partners often release Indie World games soon after their debut, you’ll have to wait for this one. Gunbrella won’t be coming until next year. And who knows, we may all have gunbrellas by then!
