Kalvin Phillips told why Pep Guardiola makes a move to Man City a better option than Man United

A Leeds United legend has explained how Kalvin Phillips was able to improve his game under Pep Guardiola at Manchester City.

Reports have suggested the Blues are considering a transfer for the England international this summer. City will be looking for a central midfielder as Fernandinho ends his nine-year stay in Manchester.

Phillips is also on the radar of City’s rivals Manchester United. Discussing Phillips’ potential move to the Etihad, John Giles claimed Guardiola could help the Leeds man develop.

He told Off the Ball : “They talk about him [Phillips] Being a defensive midfielder I think he could do a lot more with the skill he has. I don’t think he was asked to do it, I think his distribution is very good.

“When I see him hit the long pass, he can do it well with both feet, but I always have the impression that at Leeds he is a defensive midfielder and that no more is expected of him. While he might go to City if he does. Pep Guardiola will say: ‘I expect more from you on the ball’, and I would.

“If I were his manager I would say to him ‘Look, you have the ability, you need to express yourself more, you need to dominate more’. He has the ability to do it, but I don’t think he’s being asked to to do it at [Leeds] United.”
