Lankan president amid tension, clashes

Sri Lankan President Gotabaya Rajapakse said today that he will appoint a new prime minister and cabinet in the island nation this week.

“This week I will appoint a prime minister and a cabinet who can command a majority in parliament and gain the confidence of the people of the country,” he said in a speech to the nation.

“After that, a constitutional amendment will be tabled to establish the content of the 19th amendment to the constitution, giving parliament more powers. The prime minister of the new government will have the opportunity to draft a new program and move this country forward help,” he added.
