Liberal leadership ‘settled’, nationals ‘hotly contested’

Peter Dutton is expected to be elected Liberal leader “unopposed” Monday, but the Nationals face a “hotly contested vote,” said Sky News political editor Andrew Clennell.

“Which direction Dutton takes will be interesting as he is a conservative,” he said.

Conversations with colleagues this week have shown that he may be going for the center and not going hard right in terms of his approach in trying to win back liberal followers.

“While the Liberals leadership is settled with Josh Frydenberg out of the way, I expect a hotly contested vote from the Nationals leadership.

“Barnaby Joyce will be challenged by David Littleproud, his deputy, and Darren Chester.”
