Prior to the fire, monitoring showed that fox activity was very low due to control activities. However, because the fire burned much of the understory vegetation such as heather, fern, and sedge, the native ground dwellers had fewer places to hide from predators such as foxes. As a result, there were serious concerns about their ability to survive, let alone thrive.
