Payne Haas demands release of Brisbane Broncos over NRL contract saga

Payne Haas has reportedly demanded an immediate release from the Broncos, unhappy with the course of contract negotiations.

Payne Haas has reportedly demanded an immediate release from the Broncos.

The Sydney Morning Herald reports that Brisbane rejected the request, which came on Wednesday night after a failed contract negotiation with the club.

Haas trained with the Broncos on Thursday, but it is unknown if Haas will line up against the Titans Friday night, according to the report.

The prop has a contract with Brisbane until the end of 2024 on a deal reportedly worth $750,000 in 2022, and $800,000 per season in the final two years. However, in recent months there have been numerous reports that Haas is unhappy with his current arrangement and believes he is making more money than previously agreed upon by his former management.

Some NRL pundits believe Haas could get $1 million a year on the open market, with the young shooter establishing himself as the club’s best player and one of the most dominant front rowers in the NRL.

At just 22 years old, Haas has already played seven State of Origin games for NSW and represented Australia in two Tests.

Although the request for release was rejected by Brisbane, there are already rumors of which club could take Haas if he managed to wriggle out of his contract.

Entering the league next year, the Dolphins are desperate for a signature but are already well stocked in the forwards and their focus will be on finding top quality players to fill their backbones in the playmaking positions.

NRL reporter said he was told by Haas’ camp: “We didn’t think about other clubs…let’s face it…the other 16 clubs would want him.”

The big-bopper is embroiled in a legal dispute with his former management, which has cast a shadow over the contract negotiations and his future with the Broncos, which took a huge turn with his request for release on Wednesday night.

Haas has won the Paul Morgan Medal for Broncos Player of the Year three times.

After a few dark years, the Broncos are finally starting to make their way back into Kevin Walters’ second season, and this Haas bomb is the last thing the club needs.

After claiming the first wooden spoon in their history under Anthony Seibold in 2020, the Broncos continued to suffer in 2021, finishing 14th.

However, the arrival of husband Adam Reynolds to helm the ship as a halfback this season has led to a huge improvement. Brisbane have won seven from 11 games and are fifth on the ladder.
