Police: 1 arrested for theft, attempted murder at Smart and Final

ANTIOCH, Calif. (KRON) — A 29-year-old man has been arrested in Antioch, according to a police press release charged with stabbing a 58-year-old man in a robbery at a Smart and Final location.

Officers responded to a report of a robbery at 2638 Sommersville Road at 10:51 a.m. Tuesday. When they arrived, they found that the suspect had fled, but a man was lying on the floor with a knife wound to his chest. He was then transferred to a trauma center.

Officers chased Hakeem Thomas, 29, through the hills between Fairview Avenue and Buchanan Road before he stopped running. The police tried to beg Thomas to surrender and hand over his knife.

After attempts to disarm Thomas failed, the agents used “a less lethal projectile as a diversion device,” causing him to drop the knife and surrender.
