Queensland teenager pleads guilty in court to manslaughter of expecting baby

The parents of a couple who were murdered with their unborn child cried as they read heartbreaking statements from victims before a court, revealing the impact the loss has had on their families.

Matthew Field and Kate Leadbetter were killed instantly, struck by a stolen car that ran a red light while walking their dogs on Australia Day 2021.

The car was driven by a 17-year-old who cannot be named by name for legal reasons. Kate’s mother Jeannie Thorne sobbed as she read her statement and said, “I shouldn’t be here today, how can I be here when I should be in my other life, the life that has been snatched.

“I should hold her son and I should have a future full of joy and family.”

Kate’s father John Leadbetter told the court: “No parent should bury their children.

“I would trade places with her in a heartbeat.”

Matthew Field’s mother Ann said of the pair, “They were like two peas in a pod.

“They had a beautiful life together and brought a beautiful life into the world.”

The teenage driver pleaded guilty to manslaughter and several other charges.

The court learned that he was drunk and high at the time of the incident.

He is expected to be sentenced tomorrow.
