HH Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nayhan has been elected as the new president of the UAE.

The Federal Supreme Court passed the decision unanimously at a meeting held today at the Al Mushrif Palace in Abu Dhabi. Sheikh Mohamed becomes UAE’s third president, succeeding his brother Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, who passed away on Friday, May 13.

Sheikh Mohamed has also been named as the 17th ruler of Abu Dhabi, having previously served as the Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi.

According to a statement from the state news agency, Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed expressed his appreciation for the precious trust placed in him by his brothers, their Highnesses, the members of the Supreme Council and the rulers of the Emirates, and prayed to the Almighty to grant him to lead and help to bear the responsibility of this great trust and fulfill its duties to serve its country and people.
