Taiwan says China is carrying out ‘possible simulated attack’ – POLITICO

Taipei said Chinese military exercises with naval and air forces that Beijing conducted on Saturday could represent a “possible simulated attack” on the island.

The operations are part of unprecedented military exercises Beijing launched in retaliation for the visit of US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi to Taiwan. China has also suspended climate and military talks with the US

Ministry of Defense of Taiwan said Twitter posted on Saturday that it scrambled planes and ships after multiple Chinese military “craft” crossed the median line separating territorial waters from mainland China.

In a separate statement, the ministry said it had detected several batches of Chinese aircraft and warships operating around the Taiwan Strait in the morning, some of which crossed the middle line of the strait.”

Pelosi visited the self-governing island — which China considers its territory — earlier this week, sparking anger in Beijing. On Friday, China sanctioned Pelosi and her immediate family. The Chinese Foreign Ministry called Pelosi’s trip “a gross interference in China’s internal affairs” and an “outrageous provocation”.
