Ukrainian President Zelensky Announces Successful Evacuations of Mariupol

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced in a late-night speech that 156 people fleeing the Azovstal steel plant in Mariupol had arrived in Zaporizhzhya on May 3. Footage taken earlier on Tuesday showed buses arriving in Zaporizhzhya as part of a coordinated effort involving the United Nations. (UN) and the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) to evacuate civilians from Mariupol. “Finally we have the result, the first result of our evacuation operation from Azovstal in Mariupol, which we have been organizing for a long time. It took a lot of effort, long negotiations and several mediations,” says Zelensky. “Today, 156 people arrived in Zaporizhzhya. Women and children. They have been in shelters for more than two months. Imagine! For example, a child is six months old, two of which are underground, fleeing bombs and shelling. Finally, these people are completely safe. They get help.” Even when they announced the evacuations, authorities warned that hundreds of civilians were trapped in the massive industrial complex, which Ukrainian forces have made their last resort in the city.
