Sung Kim, the US special representative for North Korea, said on Tuesday that North Korea could conduct a seventh nuclear test “at any time” and that it has shown no interest in returning to negotiations.
In a telephone briefing to reporters, Kim said North Korea has launched an unprecedented number of ballistic missiles this year and that its officials are using language that could indicate their intent to use tactical nuclear weapons.
Kim confirmed to US assessments that North Korea is preparing for a seventh nuclear test, and when asked when that could happen, he added: “I have nothing else in terms of timing. They have clearly prepared and I understand that they can do a test anytime.”
Kim noted that on June 5, North Korea tested eight ballistic missiles from different regions, the largest number launched in a single day.
“North Korea has now launched 31 ballistic missiles in 2022, which is the largest number of ballistic missiles it has ever launched in a single year, surpassing its previous record of 25 in 2019. We are only in June,” Kim said. .
Kim reiterated the United States’ willingness to deal diplomatically with North Korea without preconditions, and said Washington was ready to address issues of concern for Pyongyang if it returned to talks.
“But the DPRK has not yet responded and there is still no indication that it is eager to communicate,” he said.
The US Special Representative for North Korea said he hoped China would be more willing to assist in efforts to persuade North Korea to denuclearize in the future.
Kim made the comments in Jakarta, where he is also the US ambassador to Indonesia.
