Emmanuel Macron angered over Vladimir Putin claim to ‘save face’ over Ukraine war | Politics | News

“Macron is the one who has to save face next.”

Commenting on the news, Conservative party member Mr M. Isery-Guts tweeted: “If true, Macron is an enemy of democracy! Giving a potential war criminal a chance to save face is a total disgrace. The leaders of France and Germany have proved weak. No one should respect them again.”

Another Twitter user, @Harley_Tory, said: “What would have happened to France if the British Empire had decided to let Nazi Germany keep large parts of France as Macron suggests Ukraine should cede land to Putin. Macron is a coward and a disgrace to Europe.”

And user @234pulse agreed, saying: “Macron is a coward… Tell it! A policy of reconciliation never deterred a dictator, didn’t work against Hitler and it won’t work against this murderous Putin, the French can learn more about Ukraine’s resilience.”

Questioned about the alleged friction between Mr Macron and Mr Zelensky that stemmed from the Ukrainian president’s words, the Elysée said Friday that “the president of the republic has never discussed anything with Vladimir Putin without President Zelensky’s agreement”.

Moreover, the French presidency stressed that Macron “never asked for concessions from Zelensky. He has always said that it is up to the Ukrainians to decide the terms of their negotiations with the Russians”.

The Ukrainian leader reiterated an offer to hold direct talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin, saying that Russia’s withdrawal from Ukraine should be the starting point for all talks.

He said: “As president, I am willing to talk to Putin, but only with him.
