Long lunch for Lanka at Plate it Forward HQ

A crew of six from Sri Lankan restaurants in Sydney team up to prepare a feast and raise much-needed funds for Sri Lankan charities as the country faces an unimaginable economic and humanitarian crisis.

As the world watches in horror as the war in Ukraine continues to unfold, the hoopla over the federal election campaign dominates the headlines and the pandemic continues to hum, the evolving humanitarian and economic crisis in Sri Lanka has fallen somewhat under the radar. Years of unrest – civil war, a slump in tourism after terrorist attacks and the pandemic, as well as other problems – have exacerbated a host of economic problems, leading to an inflation rate of 18.7 percent. There is a shortage of fuel, food and medicine and even paper. There are 13 hour power cuts every day and people queue up to 12 hours for gas just to cook food, which is also in short supply as the government can no longer afford to import the food the country uses. depends on.

Six Sri Lankan restaurants in Sydney have teamed up to prepare a feast and raise money for charities in Sri Lanka’s capital, Colombo. Enmore’s Colombo Social, Dish: Sri Lankan Street Food in Glebe, CBD diner Indu, Darlinghurst’s Lankan Filling Station, Sri Lankan Bites in Glebe and The Fold in Dulwich Hill will gather at the headquarters of social enterprise Plate it Forward on April 25.

Lunch starts with six snacks, including pancakes and ceviche and Sri Lankan-style empanadas. Afterwards, guests take a seat to enjoy a shared spread of curries – including goat curry and fish curry – as well as sambol, rice, and hoppers. Classic Sri Lankan dessert watalappan (a coconut custard pudding) and spiced ice cream complete the meal. Guests can also enjoy a Sri Lankan cocktail with Longleaf Tea vodka upon arrival.

Sri Lankan cricket legend Russel Arnold will lead the event and the drinks list has been compiled by Earl’s Juke co-owner Pasan Wijesena. Wine and beer during lunch is included in the ticket price.

Do you want to continue to help after lunch? Every banquet meal sold on Colombo Social until the end of May will be donated to someone in need in Colombo.
