Man with shotgun arrested after hours-long standoff at Emeryville hotel

An hour-long standoff involving a man with a shotgun suspected of threatening guests and employees of an Emeryville hotel ended early Sunday morning after officers later found him asleep on a couch in the lobby.

The stalemate ended around 4 a.m. Sunday when a 29-year-old Richmond man was taken into custody at the Sonesta Hotel, 5555 Shellmound St., according to the Emeryville Police Department.

According to authorities, the man entered the hotel with a modified shotgun and began threatening hotel guests and employees, who fled for their safety. Emeryville Police and officers from several other nearby jurisdictions surrounded the hotel for the next two hours and attempted to communicate with the man, who appeared to be pacing the hotel lobby, police said.

After officers lost sight of him for about half an hour, a drone sent into the hotel from the Alameda County Sheriff’s Office spotted the man sleeping on a couch.

No one was injured in the incident, police said.
