Terzievski defeats Gallen in epic battle

The unannounced Kriz Terzievski is the new Australian heavyweight boxing champion after beating Paul Gallen in an epic 10-round fight in Newcastle.

Terzievski dominated much of the encounter, but had to survive a heroic ninth-round blowback from Gallen before receiving the jury’s decision on Wednesday night.

Gallen had bid to become the first cross-code athlete to claim both the National Heavyweight Belt and the Australasian Heavyweight Belt.

Instead, the 40-year-old rugby league great boxer will be rethinking retirement after Terzievski was hailed as the “king of the castle”.

All three judges gave Terzievski the match 97-92.

“Age has probably caught up with me a bit. What can you do?’ said Gallen, looking battered and blue.

“Of course I won’t make a (retirement) decision now, but I just felt during those (middle) rounds that I couldn’t go as I normally do.”

Little separated the two fighters in the opening rounds before Terzievski was warned twice for low blows in the fifth and then for pushing Gallen.

The champion landed some heavy left and cut Gallen’s by one as the aging rugby league warrior began to look vulnerable.

The southpaw got a point deducted for another low shot in the seventh round, but it didn’t matter, as Terzievski’s dominance ultimately turned to Gallen.

Terzievski lined up for a killer left hook midway through an epic eighth round, but Gallen bravely climbed off the ropes to stay on his feet.

Gallen looked incredible as if he dropped Terzievski into ninth place as the 32-year-old himself looked up.

But there he lingered.

“I left it too late,” Gallen said.
