Hunter Biden turns to Hollywood mega-lawyer for advice and funding, sources say

Hunter Biden has received quiet backing and financial backing from a powerful Hollywood attorney pending the outcome of a long-running federal research in his taxes and finances is conducted by the US attorney in Delaware, multiple sources told CBS News.

Kevin Morris, the attorney known for closing the $550 million licensing deal for the creators of South Park and who later won a Tony Award as co-producer of the hit musical “Book of Mormon,” is now working on a legal and media strategy for Hunter Biden, his office confirmed this week. It declined further comment.

President Biden’s son has a robust New York legal team taking on his defense in the ongoing Delaware criminal investigation that focused on his tax and financial dealings. Operating behind the scenes, Morris has in recent weeks turned his attention to conducting a forensic analysis and investigation into what happened to Hunter Biden’s laptop — including how the device went public, sources familiar with his efforts say.

Joining the blood-curdling political battle is an unusual move for Morris, who has long been a Hollywood maverick. Morris founded a law firm representing a cast of A-list stars and then began writing fiction and producing documentaries. He also went on to help negotiate another “South Park” deal worth a reported $900 million with MTV Entertainment Studios, which is part of CBS News’ parent company Paramount.

Hunter Biden could not be reached for comment, but his criminal defense attorney, Christopher Clark, confirmed that Morris is acting as “lawyer and trusted advisor” to Hunter Biden.

Morris has also been working on a documentary about Hunter Biden’s life since he was the focus of conservative television commentators and scrutinized by congressional Republicans, a Democratic Party source in Washington said.

A source familiar with the agreement between Morris and Hunter Biden said the attorney has paid Hunter Biden’s tax arrears. The New York Times reported in March that Hunter Biden had told his employees that he had taken out a loan to pay back more than $1 million in back taxes. A long-running federal investigation by the Trump-appointed US attorney includes a close examination of Hunter Biden’s taxes. CBS News previously reported that a grand jury has been hearing evidence on the matter in Delaware for months.

Federal investigators have subpoenaed documents from a paternity case containing tax records for the president’s son, an attorney involved in the paternity case told CBS News. “They wanted every record regarding Hunter Biden that we had,” said Clint Lancaster. Lancaster represented Lunden Roberts, a woman who filed a lawsuit against Hunter Biden in 2019 for claiming to be the father of her child.

A December 2020 subpoena from the U.S. law firm in Delaware, also obtained by CBS News, requested that all documents “relating to [Hunter] Biden’s income, assets, debts, liabilities and financial transactions … and all personal and business expenses.”

Hunter Biden and Morris both live in the Los Angeles area, where the president’s son has lived while he painted and sold his artwork. The law firm founded by Morris once represented such celebrities as Matthew McConaughey, Ellen DeGeneres, Scarlett Johansson, Zoe Saldana, Zach Galifianakis, Chris Rock and Laura Linney. Morris has also written two novels and a book of short stories.
