The World Health Organization (WHO) said in a briefing Monday that it had been notified of more than 3,400 confirmed cases of monkeypox and one death last Wednesday, most of them from Europe.

Since June 17, it has reported 1,310 new cases, the WHO said, and eight new countries are reporting cases of monkeypox.

The World Health Organization said on Saturday that monkeypox had not yet reached the status of a global health emergency, although WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said he was deeply concerned about the outbreak.
