What time is it and what TV channel is it on?

The FA Cup final referee for Chelsea against Liverpool on Saturday is Craig Pawson, Telegraph Sport can reveal.

The Football Association has confirmed that the 43-year-old will be joined by Dan Cook and Edward Smart, while the fourth official will be David Coote. Video assistant referee is Paul Tierney and assistant Var is Simon Bennett.

“I got a call yesterday morning, so I was delighted, as you can imagine,” explains Pawson. “It has been a lifelong ambition to referee the FA Cup final and it is the pinnacle of anyone’s career, so I am delighted to receive this honour.

“It will be a great final between two great teams and the fact that it is also the 150th anniversary of the first FA Cup final is the icing on the cake. I’m really looking forward to it now.”

Pawson is one of ten FIFA-ranked referees in the select group one list in the Premier League and as such the highest ranking of officials not to have whistled an FA Cup final. The FA Cup final is considered the pinnacle of an English referee’s career, although others, such as Howard Webb and Mark Clattenburg, have played in the Champions League, European Championship and World Cup finals in the past.

Michael Oliver and Anthony Taylor, the country’s two leading referees, have each been to the FA Cup final twice. Both got a second in the two years the game was played during lockdowns, when there was no audience in 2020 and then reduced capacity last year. It was felt that it would be unfair for a referee to have his one final without a full crowd.

The umpires and assistants still attend an ‘Eve of final rally’ black tie gala the night before the game, an FA tradition that has survived the professionalization of officials being held at the Kennington Oval this year.
