CHICAGO (CBS) – A man has been charged in a shooting that left a Chicago police officer in hospital on the south side of town.

Jerome Halsey, 27, was charged with attempted first degree murder, aggravated assault and aggravated assault. Halsey is expected to appear in bond court on Tuesday.

On June 5 at about 2:00 p.m., police said the officer set a traffic stop in an unmarked vehicle on the 6900 block of South Sangamon Street in Englewood.

The officer was shot in the arm and torso and was taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center. Police confirm that the officer is in serious but stable condition.

Halsey was also shot and transported to Advocate Christ Medical Center in critical condition.

A firearm was found at the scene.

Chicago police said the officers were in an unmarked but uniformed car when they tried to stop traffic on Sangamon. The driver they were trying to stop stopped in a dead end road, got out and started firing at the officers.
