Syrian President Assad visits Iran for meetings on rare trip

TEHRAN, Iran (AP) — Syrian President Bashar Assad was in Tehran on Sunday to meet with Iranian leaders, Iranian state-affiliated media reported, marking his second trip to Tehran since the Syrian civil war broke out in 2011.

Nour News, close to Iran’s security apparatus, said in Sunday’s report that Assad had met Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and President Ebrahim Raisi earlier in the day. It said Assad later left Tehran for Damascus, Syria.

It said details of the meetings will be published later.

This is Assad’s first visit in more than two years. His previous visit was in February 2019.

Iran is a key regional supporter of Assad in the Arab nation’s civil war that broke out in 2011.
