Undisclosed threat closes Victoria International Airport to commercial flights: RCMP

BC RCMP says there are no public safety concerns after an “unfolding” threat shuts down commercial flights at Victoria International Airport, but travelers are still being asked to avoid YYJ.

In an update provided at 4:12 p.m., RCMP said there are no security risks despite the threat, but the public is still being asked to avoid the airport “for the next few hours.”

The Victoria International Airport (YYJ) said at 3:23 p.m. that it was being closed to commercial flights and asked travelers to avoid the airport due to an undisclosed RCMP incident.

YYJ tweeted on Tuesday afternoon that it was asking travelers not to visit the airport as the incident unfolded, saying only that the RCMP was “responding to [a] call for service.”

Travelers should also check their flight status with their carrier or on the YYJ website.

“Victoria Airport Authority cannot provide further comment at this time. We will endeavor to provide more information as it becomes available,” the airport said.

When contacted by CHEK News, an airport spokesperson reiterated that they were unable to provide further information at this time.

Flight Aware’s flight tracking website showed that at least one flight scheduled to land on Victoria, Air Canada Jazz Flight 8489 from Calgary, had been diverted to Vancouver.
